What to expect
Turn up on a Sunday morning from 9 at Ride Leisure at Wyboston for their training sessions. There is a brief session for any newcomers to provide safety training, explain what happens and answer any questions and then its into the boat.
There’s also a covered seating area, and food and drink available so that you can see what happens in comfort if you want to just watch for the first week.

The training sessions are a mixture of fun and physical conditioning. There is nothing like exercising with a group of friends and being part of a close knit team to motivate and encourage you. There are 3 sessions a week you can train.
Racing is a big part of what they are all about and each year, they take part in national races around the country organised by their sporting body, the British Dragonboat Association (BDA). This is a fantastic opportunity to meet lots of like minded clubs and paddlers in the wider dragon boat community…. not to mention bring home some bling!
A huge part of the dragon boating culture is having fun with your friends and teammates.
Being out paddling on the river is amazing and the coaches find many inventive ways to keep motivation going
There are also opportunties to socialise off the water with the team, with organised quiz nights, summer BBQs and Christmas parties. Dragon Boating by its nature is a very sociable sport!
Dragon boating is a very unique sport whereby family members can take part together, not only in a fun and friendly atmosphere but also at a competitive level. For example there are fathers, mothers, sons, daughters and even grandparents all in the same boat.
If you don’t want to paddle, there are other roles within the team that are just as vital.
- Drummers keeping time on the drum at the front of the boat
- Helms steering the boat at the back
- BDA qualified coaches organising sessions, boat loads, training plans, race days etc
