Nihongo Club Cambridge is the leading provider of Japanese language lessons and cultural education for children and young people in the Cambridge area. Based in Bar Hill, the Club also organises seasonal Japanese cultural events.
This activity is good for wellbeing because
- it’s a good way to make new friends;
- learning a language is rewarding;
- learning about Japanese culture through creative, entertaining and sociable activities and events is great fun!
“I was born in the UK, my mum is Japanese but I speak English, but I’d love to understand Japanese too! The Nihongo Club is such a lovely Japanese Saturday school because there are lots of other students like me, and we can study together. I always look forward to the events at the club, where we can enjoy Japanese sweets, food and activities!”

What to expect
If you’re a child in a Japanese-speaking environment, aged between 2 and 15, living in the Cambridge area, then Nihongo Club is a great way to learn and have fun exploring Japanese culture and language. Classes are held on Saturdays in term time.
Nihongo Clubs are exclusively run by parents. Membership is only open to those with at least one mother tongue Japanese parent who uses the language daily at home. All communication within the school, including that between management and teachers, is in Japanese. The Nihongo Club provides a solid foundation in Japanese, using the same textbooks as Japanese schools, whilst learning face-to-face with other students. You can also take part in seasonal activities and events to learn about Japanese culture.
If you are in Year 5 to 11 with no previous learning experience of Japanese, there are Japanese as a Foreign Language (JLC) classes. JLC classes provide beginner Japanese language education, taught by English speaking teachers.
The Nihongo Club is not just for kids either – there’s a Japanese community for parents too.
