Ramsey Rural Museum

Back to Activities

An independent museum set in a peaceful rural location on the edge of the market town of Ramsey in Cambridgeshire. Fascinating displays of historical objects, events, talks, kids' activities, the Ramsey area archives, home-made cakes and much, much more.

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • Walking around the museum and grounds provides gentle physical activity in a peaceful setting
  • Exploring local history can stimulate the mind and spark positive memories or curiosity
  • The tranquil rural environment offers a calming escape that supports relaxation and stress relief

“It is a very charming museum, lovely to move from one themed area to another.”

What to Expect

Many of the museum’s rooms are tucked away inside buildings that are historic in their own right, with some of the oldest stone structures dating all the way back to the 17th century.

Visitors can enjoy a break in the licensed tea room, which opens whenever the museum does. It serves freshly brewed teas and coffees, cold drinks, and a very tempting selection of locally made cakes, snacks, and light bites. The tea room is open to everyone, not just museum visitors. During special events, the menu often expands to include an even wider range.

Book lovers will feel right at home in the museum’s bookshop, which houses around 3,000 donated titles spanning fiction and non-fiction. Every book is in great condition, sensibly priced, and neatly arranged to make browsing easy.

Just by the reception, the small but lovely gift shop offers an array of museum-themed keepsakes and locally crafted goodies.

Surrounded by ancient oak trees and open grasslands, the museum’s rural setting (once known as Hassocks Meadow) is a peaceful haven. Visitors can wander through a sensory garden, a colourful wildflower area, a traditional domestic garden beside Darlow’s Farm Cottage, and a relaxing grassy space by the thatched well.

More Information

Please see their website for their opening times.

To find the museum: It is at the end of a lane off the B1096 between Ramsey and Ramsey Forty Foot. The lane entrance is directly opposite the Ramsey-end of the cemetery and the museum is signposted from the road. The lane is not always suitable for cars with very low suspension. There is free parking for coaches and cars, including eight dedicated spaces for disabled drivers.

They have toilets and baby-changing facilities and can warm baby food and feeding bottles – just ask in reception. They provide a radar-key operated disabled toilet, with alarm.

There is wheelchair access to all but one of the Museum’s display rooms, and they provide a video presentation of the exhibits in this area. In addition, electric and large wheelchairs cannot access the Darlow’s Farm Cottage.

Entry to the museum is free, but donations are extremely welcomed.
